This card is an RFID-enabled access key issued by Alia Servizi Ambientali SpA (soon to be Plures SpA), the primary environmental services provider for Central Tuscany. These cards, often referred to as a "chiavetta" (little key) or RFID card, are distributed to residents and businesses in municipalities like Florence, Prato, and Pistoia. They are used to unlock digital waste containers on the street or to identify users at collection points (Ecocentri), ensuring that waste disposal is tracked for billing and sustainability purposes.
Alia Servizi Ambientali was formed through the merger of several local utilities to centralize waste management, water, and energy services. The brand serves as a bridge between citizens and the public administration's environmental goals. As of 2026, the company is transitioning into a larger multi-utility framework named Plures SpA, which remains entirely under public ownership by dozens of Tuscan municipalities.
While the technology for the internal RFID tags may be sourced globally, the cards are programmed, issued, and managed directly within Italy to support local waste collection infrastructure. The ownership is decentralized among various Italian municipal governments, with the City of Florence maintaining the largest single shareholding.
