Darkest Dungeon is a critically acclaimed gothic roguelike role-playing game originally developed and published by Red Hook Studios. The brand was founded in Vancouver, Canada, by Chris Bourassa and Tyler Sigman, who formed the studio specifically to create this title. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign and an Early Access period, the game was officially released in 2016 and has since expanded into a major franchise with sequels and downloadable content.
In September 2024, Red Hook Studios was acquired by Behaviour Interactive, the Canadian developer and publisher best known for the survival horror hit Dead by Daylight. This acquisition was part of a strategic move by Behaviour Interactive to solidify its position as a leader in the horror gaming genre. Under the current ownership structure, Red Hook Studios operates as an independent subsidiary, maintaining creative and operational control over its intellectual properties while benefiting from the resources and scale of its parent company.
As a digital software product, Darkest Dungeon is developed and distributed globally across various platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. While the core creative development is rooted in Canada, the physical manufacturing of retail editions and the distribution through digital storefronts occur across multiple countries worldwide.
