Billy Tea is one of Australia’s most storied brands, deeply interwoven with the nation’s cultural identity. Founded in 1888 by James Inglis, the brand became a household name through its clever marketing, which featured the iconic Australian swagman boiling his billy. Notably, the brand is responsible for the first publication of the arrangement of 'Waltzing Matilda' in 1905, as James Inglis purchased the rights to the song and distributed the sheet music with packets of tea.

While the brand was originally founded and operated in Australia for nearly a century by James Inglis & Co, it underwent ownership changes in the late 20th century. It was eventually acquired by the global beverage giant Tata Consumer Products (formerly Tata Global Beverages). Despite its quintessentially Australian branding and legacy, the tea is now primarily blended and packed in India, home to its parent company's extensive tea operations. It remains a staple on Australian supermarket shelves, appealing to consumers through nostalgia and its historical connection to the bush tradition.
