Solarwatt is a premium German renewable energy company headquartered in Dresden. Founded in 1993, the brand became a pioneer in the industry by introducing the world's first glass-glass solar module in 1998, a technology that significantly increases the durability and lifespan of solar panels. For decades, the company was known for maintaining its manufacturing base in Germany, specifically at its F8 production facility in Dresden.
However, due to evolving global market conditions and the competitive landscape of the photovoltaic industry, Solarwatt announced a strategic shift in 2024. While research, development, and quality testing remain centralized at its headquarters in Dresden, the company has transitioned its primary manufacturing operations for solar panels and battery storage systems to specialized contract partners in Asia, particularly China. This move allows the brand to remain competitive while focusing on its strengths in engineering and integrated energy management software.
The brand is almost entirely owned by Stefan Quandt, a prominent German billionaire and the majority shareholder of the BMW Group. This connection is reflected in Solarwatt's product line, such as the Battery flex storage system, which was developed in technical collaboration with BMW using automotive-grade battery technology.
