Scott Sports, originally known as Scott USA, has a storied history that began in 1958 when engineer Ed Scott revolutionized skiing with the invention of the aluminum ski pole in Sun Valley, Idaho. The brand entered the cycling world in 1986 with its first mountain bike and gained global fame in 1989 when Greg LeMond used Scott’s aerodynamic handlebars to win the Tour de France. While the company's technical roots are American, it moved its headquarters to Givisiez, Switzerland, in 1978, which remains the heart of its design and engineering operations today.
Manufacturing of Scott bicycles primarily takes place in specialized facilities in Taiwan and China, which are global hubs for high-end carbon fiber and alloy frame production. Some assembly also occurs in European facilities, including the Netherlands. This global supply chain allows Scott to maintain its reputation for lightweight innovation and high-performance engineering.
Regarding ownership, Scott Sports underwent a significant transition in 2015 when the South Korean conglomerate Youngone Corporation acquired a majority stake. By 2025, following a period of shared leadership and subsequent legal rulings, Youngone Corporation consolidated its control to approximately 97% of the company. Despite the South Korean ownership, Scott continues to operate as a Swiss-based brand, keeping its research, development, and management centered in Switzerland to preserve its European performance identity.
