Founded in 2016 in Berlin, Germany, it serves as an alternative to platforms like Substack by providing tools for membership management, subscription billing, and multi-channel community building. The service is particularly known for its comprehensive handling of European tax (VAT) and GDPR compliance, making it a preferred choice for creators operating within the EU.

The brand was established by Sebastian Esser and Philipp Schwörbel, who were previously involved in the community-funded journalism project Krautreporter. Their experience with the logistical hurdles of crowdfunding led to the creation of Steady as a dedicated infrastructure for other creators.
