Magura is a storied German engineering brand specializing in high-performance hydraulic systems for bicycles and motorcycles. Founded in 1893 by Gustav Magenwirth in Bad Urach, Germany, the brand name is a clever portmanteau of the founder's name and his hometown (MAgenwirth GUstav RAch). The company is widely credited with revolutionizing the cycling industry by introducing the first hydraulic rim brake in 1987 and the first hydraulic disc brake in 1996.
While Magura remains deeply rooted in its German heritage, maintaining significant high-tech manufacturing and injection molding facilities in Bad Urach and Hülben, it operates a global production network. High-volume components and assemblies are often handled by their subsidiary in Taiwan (MAGURA Asia) to serve the international bicycle market. Historically an independent family business for over 130 years, Magura entered a significant new chapter in early 2025. The brand and its manufacturing parent, Magenwirth Technologies, were acquired by the Indian industrial conglomerate ADVIK Group to create a global leader in braking systems. Simultaneously, the distribution and service arm formerly known as Magura Bosch Parts & Services (MBPS) became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bosch eBike Systems, though it continues to provide long-term service and supply for Magura products.
