The Hive Active Heating thermostat is a cornerstone of the UK's smart home market, originally launched in 2013 by British Gas. Designed by the renowned Swiss-born designer Yves Béhar, the device is recognized for its sleek, mirrored interface and tactile central dial. It allows users to manage their home heating and hot water remotely via a smartphone app, promoting energy efficiency and convenience.
The brand was incubated within the 'Connected Homes' division of Centrica, the parent company of British Gas. In 2015, Centrica strengthened the platform by acquiring AlertMe, the technology partner that initially helped develop the Hive system. This acquisition allowed Hive to expand into a full ecosystem of smart products, including plugs, lights, and sensors.
While the brand is deeply rooted in British engineering and headquartered in London, its manufacturing reflects a global supply chain typical of high-tech consumer electronics. Components and assembly are sourced through international partners, predominantly in Asia, to meet large-scale demand. Today, Hive continues to operate as a subsidiary of Centrica, focusing on 'Net Zero' initiatives and energy-saving technology for over two million customers.
