The brand's journey began in 1929 in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, where Wilfred Handley, an industrial chemist and dental mechanic, first produced a sodium hypochlorite solution in his garden shed. Initially, the product was sold door-to-door in stoneware jars as a general-purpose sterilizer and drain cleaner.

In 1961, the brand was acquired by Lever Brothers (now part of Unilever), which facilitated its massive global expansion. Today, Domestos is marketed in over 45 countries under various names, such as Glorix in the Netherlands, Domex in India and the Philippines, and Vim in Vietnam and South America.
