Shell is one of the world's most recognizable energy brands, with a history that began in the early 19th century. The name itself originates from a small London business founded in 1833 by Marcus Samuel Sr., which originally imported and sold oriental seashells to collectors. His sons later transitioned the business into oil transportation, commissioning the world's first purpose-built oil tanker, the Murex, in 1892.
In 1907, the British 'Shell' Transport and Trading Company merged with the Dutch Royal Dutch Petroleum Company to form the Royal Dutch Shell Group. This Anglo-Dutch partnership remained the core structure for over a century until a major reorganization in 2022. During this shift, the company simplified its structure, moved its tax residence and global headquarters entirely to London, and officially rebranded from Royal Dutch Shell plc to Shell plc.
Today, Shell is a publicly traded multinational corporation listed on the London, Amsterdam, and New York stock exchanges. While it is owned by millions of individual and institutional shareholders—with major asset managers like BlackRock and Vanguard holding significant stakes—it operates as an independent entity. Its manufacturing and refining operations are truly global, with major facilities located in the United States, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Canada, among dozens of other countries.
