Flora Plant B+tter is a dairy-free, vegan alternative to traditional butter, designed for spreading, cooking, and baking. The brand Flora was originally launched in the United Kingdom in 1964 by Unilever as a heart-healthy alternative to butter, primarily using sunflower oil.
In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads business to the American investment firm KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts) for approximately €6.8 billion. This transaction led to the formation of Upfield, which rebranded itself as Flora Food Group in September 2024 to better reflect its identity as a leader in plant-based nutrition.
While the brand has its roots in the UK and Netherlands, production is now global to serve regional markets. Manufacturing takes place in various locations across the European Union and internationally, including major facilities in Germany and previously the Netherlands. As of early 2026, KKR remains the ultimate owner of Flora Food Group, which is headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, though reports indicate KKR is exploring a potential sale of the business.
