Mona is a legendary Dutch dairy brand that revolutionized the dessert market in the Netherlands. Founded in 1967 in Amsterdam, it introduced the first ready-to-eat dairy desserts to a market where consumers previously had to make their own puddings from scratch. The brand quickly became a household name, famous for its 'Toetje van de Maand' (Dessert of the Month) and its iconic pudding shapes.
Historically, Mona operated its own dedicated factories in the Netherlands, notably in Woerden and Borne. However, as part of corporate restructuring under its parent company, production was shifted to other facilities. Today, much of the production, including its famous puddings, takes place at large-scale dairy plants such as the Heilbronn facility in Germany. Despite the shift in manufacturing locations, the brand maintains its strong Dutch identity and remains one of the top-selling dairy brands in Dutch supermarkets.
In terms of ownership, Mona is part of the FrieslandCampina portfolio, one of the world's largest dairy cooperatives. FrieslandCampina was formed through the merger of Friesland Foods and Campina, the latter of which had integrated Mona into its operations decades earlier. As of 2026, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of the Royal FrieslandCampina cooperative, headquartered in Amersfoort, Netherlands.
