Carretilla Asparagus

Carretilla is one of Spain's most iconic food brands, with a heritage dating back to 1875. Originally recognized for its high-quality canned vegetables, particularly white asparagus, the brand has evolved significantly over nearly 150 years. While the brand is famously Spanish in its origin and marketing, the sourcing and manufacturing of its asparagus often extend internationally. For many of its glass-jar asparagus products, the raw material is sourced and processed in China due to global supply chain dynamics, although higher-end specific lines (like Espárrago de Navarra) are produced locally in Spain.

The brand was originally developed by Industrias Muerza in Navarre. In modern history, it became part of Industrias Alimentarias de Navarra (Grupo IAN). In 2015, the private equity firm Portobello Capital acquired Grupo IAN from the Viscofan group. As of 2026, Portobello Capital remains the ultimate owner, continuing to drive the brand's expansion into ready-to-eat microwaveable meals and other innovative food solutions while maintaining its leadership in the traditional preserved vegetable market.
