Smeg is an iconic Italian brand that has become synonymous with premium domestic appliances, particularly its 1950s-style retro line. Founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla, Italy, the brand's name is an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (Emilian Metallurgical Enamelling Works Guastalla). Originally focused on enameling and metalworking, Smeg transitioned into advanced kitchen technology, collaborating with world-renowned architects like Renzo Piano and Guido Canali to merge high fashion with home utility.

While Smeg’s major appliances (like ovens and hobs) are primarily manufactured in its four plants across Northern Italy (Guastalla, Milan, Turin, and Chieti), its small domestic appliances, including the famous retro toasters, follow a global manufacturing strategy. These are designed in Italy by the creative studio Deepdesign but are often assembled in China (specifically Shenzhen) to leverage high-efficiency production for international markets, while maintaining rigorous Italian design standards.

Today, Smeg remains a private, family-owned enterprise, managed by the third generation of the Bertazzoni family. It continues to operate as an independent entity, headquartered in Italy, with a presence in over 15 countries through various subsidiaries. The brand's products are widely celebrated for their 'Made in Italy' aesthetic and have won numerous international design awards such as the Red Dot and iF Design Awards.
