Founded in 1949 in Hamburg, Germany, by Max Herz and Carl Tchilinghiryan, Tchibo began as a revolutionary mail-order coffee service. The name itself is a portmanteau of "Tchiling" (after the co-founder) and "Bohnen" (German for beans).

Over several decades, the brand transformed from a national mail-order firm into a massive international retail and coffee chain.
