Pågen is Sweden's leading bakery and one of the country's most prominent food exporters. The brand's journey began in 1878 in Malmö, when husband and wife Anders and Matilda Påhlsson started a small home bakery. Matilda provided the initial capital, while Anders transitioned from a carpenter at a shipyard to a full-time baker after being given an ultimatum by his employer. Originally known as A. Påhlssons bageri, the company rebranded to Pågen in 1965—a word meaning 'the boy' in the local Scanian dialect—to convey youthful vitality and local heritage.
Today, the company remains a family-owned business, operated under Pågen Gruppen AB. Its manufacturing is focused in Sweden, with two major industrial bakeries located in Malmö and Gothenburg that produce a wide range of products including bread, cinnamon rolls (Gifflar), and Swedish toasts (Krisprolls). While the brand is a staple in Nordic households, it has achieved significant international success, particularly in Germany and France, where its products are marketed as a taste of Swedish tradition.
