Fred Perry is an iconic British heritage brand founded in 1952 by the legendary triple Wimbledon champion Fred Perry and Austrian footballer Tibby Wegner. Originally launched as a functional sportswear label, it became world-renowned for its signature piqué cotton polo shirt featuring the Laurel Wreath logo. Over the decades, the brand evolved from the tennis court to become a central symbol of British youth subcultures, most notably the Mod movement of the 1960s.
While the brand maintains deep roots in British culture and operates its global headquarters in London, manufacturing is distributed globally to maintain both heritage quality and commercial scale. The 'Made in England' collection continues to be produced in Leicester, echoing the brand's original manufacturing origins. However, the majority of its global retail volume is produced in specialized facilities across China, Vietnam, Portugal, and Japan. Additionally, various footwear and accessory lines are manufactured in Italy and Germany.
Historically a family-run business, Fred Perry was acquired in 1995 by the Japanese apparel company Hit Union. Despite this change in ultimate ownership, the brand's creative and strategic direction remains centered in the United Kingdom, preserving its identity as a quintessential British fashion institution.
