STIGA is a storied European brand originally founded in Sweden in 1934 by Stig Hjelmquist. While the brand initially gained global fame for its table tennis and sports equipment, it expanded into the garden machinery market in 1958 with its first lawnmower. Today, STIGA is a leading name in high-quality outdoor power equipment, specifically recognized for its signature yellow and black lawn mowers and innovative battery-powered solutions.

In 2000, STIGA merged with the Italian companies Castelgarden SpA and Alpina Professional & Garden SpA to form Global Garden Products (GGP). In 2017, the group was officially rebranded as the STIGA Group to better capitalize on the premium reputation of its flagship brand. Although it retains deep Swedish roots and a strong heritage in Scandinavia, the company's ultimate headquarters are now located in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy.

Manufacturing for STIGA products takes place across multiple locations to serve its global market. The group operates key production facilities in Italy, Slovakia (Poprad), and China (Guangzhou), with the Slovakian plant being a primary hub for petrol and battery-powered walk-behind mowers like the one shown. Ownership is currently held by private investment firms, with the STIGA Group being the ultimate parent entity managing a portfolio of brands including Alpina, Mountfield, and Atco.
