The '28' in its name refers to the original gravity of 28 degrees Plato, a measurement of the sugar concentration in the wort prior to fermentation, which was historically among the highest for a bottom-fermented beer.

The brand originates from Kulmbach, a city in Bavaria, Germany, with a brewing heritage dating back to the 19th century. Originally produced by the Erste Kulmbacher Actienbrauerei (EKU), founded in 1872, the beer became famous during the late 20th century for its rivalry with other local breweries in the 'World's Strongest Beer' category. Today, it remains a specialty product brewed according to the German Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516.

While the original EKU brewery merged with its competitors in 1996, the brand is now produced under the umbrella of the Kulmbacher Brauerei AG. This larger corporation is ultimately controlled by the Paulaner Brauerei Gruppe, which ensures that the traditional brewing methods and historical recipes, including those for the legendary EKU 28, are preserved for international enthusiasts.
