The brand name Dulux, a portmanteau of "Durable" and "Luxury," was first introduced in 1931 by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in the United Kingdom. It was pioneering as one of the first alkyd-based synthetic finishes, moving away from traditional oil-based paints.

The brand's ownership is split globally. In Australia and New Zealand, Dulux operates under the DuluxGroup, which was originally a subsidiary of ICI and later Orica before being spun off and eventually acquired by the Japanese conglomerate Nippon Paint Holdings in 2019. In the United Kingdom, Europe, and many other international markets, the Dulux brand is owned and manufactured by the Dutch multinational AkzoNobel.

Manufacturing for the Australian market is primarily centralized at the DuluxGroup production facility in Rocklea, Queensland, and the state-of-the-art automated paint factory in Merrifield, Victoria.
