Jitsi Meet is a premier open-source video conferencing platform known for its focus on security and privacy. The project's origins trace back to 2003 at the University of Strasbourg in France, where it was founded by Emil Ivov as a student project originally called SIP Communicator. The brand name 'Jitsi' was adopted in 2011, derived from the Bulgarian word for 'wires.'

Unlike traditional physical products, Jitsi Meet is a digital software solution developed by a global community of contributors. Its commercial trajectory involved acquisition by BlueJimp (the company founded by Ivov), which was later acquired by the Australian software giant Atlassian in 2015. In 2018, the project was sold to the American cloud communications company 8x8, Inc.

Today, 8x8 remains the ultimate owner and primary commercial backer of Jitsi Meet, although the software remains open-source under the Apache License 2.0. This allows the platform to be hosted on servers worldwide, making it a truly global product without a single manufacturing site. The ultimate owner, 8x8, is headquartered in Campbell, California, USA.
