The Bulwark is an American digital media outlet specializing in political news, analysis, and commentary. Launched in December 2018, it was founded by conservative commentators Sarah Longwell, Charlie Sykes, and Bill Kristol. The publication emerged as a spiritual successor to The Weekly Standard, hiring many of its former digital staff shortly after that magazine's closure to provide a platform for principled, center-right voices often associated with the "Never Trump" movement.
Originally established as a nonprofit project under the Defending Democracy Together Institute (DDTI), a 501(c)(3) educational organization, the outlet transitioned to a for-profit commercial model in August 2021. It was acquired by Center Enterprises, Inc., which operates under the trade name Bulwark Media. The platform has achieved significant commercial success through a multi-platform strategy, including high-ranking newsletters on Substack, a robust podcast network, and a fast-growing YouTube presence.
Today, The Bulwark is characterized as a mission-driven media company that remains rooted in Washington, D.C. While its editorial stance is center-right to centrist, it is widely recognized for its vocal opposition to populism and its focus on defending liberal democratic institutions and constitutional norms.
