Founded in 1999 by the Bordoy family, the brand is owned by the Motos Bordoy group, a major player in the Spanish motorcycling industry with over 50 years of experience. The name itself is a portmanteau: 'Mac' (meaning son, like the Scottish prefix) and 'Bor' (for Bordoy), signifying its status as the 'son of Bordoy.'

While the brand's heart and design studio are firmly rooted in Barcelona, where engineers handle R&D and quality control, the actual manufacturing utilizes a global supply chain. Most of Macbor's modern range is produced in partnership with large manufacturers in China, such as Zongshen, though final assembly, customization, and rigorous quality testing are often handled in Spain to meet European standards.
