Originally starting with a single weight-gainer product called 'Critical Mass' in a small shop in Kirkby, the brand has rapidly expanded into a global entity. It is well-regarded for its vertical integration, meaning the vast majority of its products are developed and produced in-house.

Manufacturing takes place primarily at the company's own state-of-the-art facility located in Knowsley, Liverpool. By managing its own production line, the brand maintains high quality standards and cost control, allowing it to compete effectively in over 80 countries. The company has a heavy focus on professional sports, with several high-profile partnerships with football clubs and batch-testing certifications like Informed-Sport to ensure product safety for athletes.

In terms of ownership, Applied Nutrition underwent a significant transition in late 2024 when it launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange. By early 2026, the brand's ownership structure became more distributed among public shareholders. Notably, JD Sports Fashion plc, which held a significant minority stake for several years and helped fuel the brand's retail expansion, sold its remaining interest in April 2026. Today, it operates as Applied Nutrition plc, a publicly traded company rooted in its original Liverpool headquarters.
