GameStop is the world's largest specialty retailer of video games, consumer electronics, and gaming merchandise. Founded in 1984 as Babbage's in Dallas, Texas, the company underwent several transformations and mergers, notably with Software Etc., before officially launching the GameStop brand name in 1999.

Today, GameStop operates as an independent public company (NYSE: GME) following its 2004 spin-off from former parent company Barnes & Noble. While it is primarily a service provider through its global network of thousands of storefronts, it also sells physical hardware and accessories manufactured by global tech giants in locations spanning China, Vietnam, and other major electronics hubs.
