The brand originated in 1895 in the village of Molenrij, Netherlands, founded by three local entrepreneurs (Hegge, Leima, and Wiersum) to stimulate the local economy and provide a market for regional mustard seeds. In 1926, the factory moved to Groningen, where it remains headquartered today.

Since 2010, the brand has been under the ultimate ownership of Remia CV, a major family-owned Dutch sauce and margarine manufacturer. Remia acquired the company from the French family business Gyma. As of 2026, the brand continues to operate as a subsidiary, preserving its traditional Groningen craftsmanship while benefiting from Remia's extensive distribution network.
