The brand has a rich history that bridges Swiss craftsmanship and German production. It was originally founded in 1901 by the Swiss chocolatier Philippe Suchard, who had been refining his confectionery skills since 1825. The name itself is a clever portmanteau of the German words for its primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa).

While the brand's roots are firmly planted in the Swiss Alps, Milka's primary production hub has historically been located in Lörrach, Germany. Today, the manufacturing of Milka products like the 90g Bubbly bar is spread across several European locations to serve different regional markets. While Germany remains a major production site, the snacks are also produced in facilities in countries such as Slovakia, Poland, and Romania.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major corporate mergers over the last century. After being part of Jacobs Suchard, Milka was acquired by Kraft Foods in 1990. In 2012, Kraft Foods demerged its snack business, leading to the creation of Mondelēz International. As of 2026, Mondelēz continues to be the ultimate owner, managing Milka as one of its flagship global brands alongside other household names like Oreo and Cadbury.
