Rombat is the leading automotive battery manufacturer in Romania, with a history dating back to 1980 when it was established as Acumulatorul Bistrița. Throughout its decades of operation, the company has evolved from a state-owned entity into a major international player. It is currently the only 360-degree integrated battery producer in Romania, operating its own manufacturing plants and a specialized lead recycling center called REBAT.
In 2012, Rombat was acquired by the South African automotive component group Metair Investments Limited. Under this ownership, Rombat has expanded its reach significantly, exporting over 60% of its production to more than 40 countries across four continents. The company is a key strategic supplier for major automotive brands including Dacia, Renault, and Ford.
In recent years, Rombat has focused heavily on sustainability, investing in photovoltaic parks to power its production with green energy. Despite facing regulatory challenges, such as a 2023 European Commission fine related to past industry practices, the brand remains a dominant force in the European aftermarket and OEM sectors, continuing to innovate with AGM and EFB technologies for modern vehicle fleets.
