Ferrero Rocher is one of the world's most recognizable premium chocolate brands, famous for its whole roasted hazelnut encased in a thin wafer shell filled with hazelnut cream and covered in milk chocolate and chopped hazelnuts. The brand was created in 1982 by Michele Ferrero in Alba, Italy, a town in the Piedmont region renowned for its hazelnut production. The product was named after a grotto in the Roman Catholic shrine of Lourdes, the Rocher de Massabielle.
While the brand's heart remains in Italy, manufacturing is an international operation to meet global demand. Ferrero operates numerous production plants across Europe (notably in Italy and Germany), North America, and Australia. In Australia, while Ferrero's Lithgow factory is famous for producing Nutella and Tic Tac for the region, the iconic gold-wrapped Rocher pralines are often imported from Ferrero's specialized European facilities or other global hubs depending on the specific market and SKU.
Ownership of the brand has remained strictly within the Ferrero family since its inception in 1946. Today, the Ferrero Group is one of the largest confectionery companies in the world, managed by the third generation of the family. The group has expanded significantly through acquisitions (such as parts of Nestlé's US candy business and businesses formerly under Kellogg's), but Ferrero Rocher remains its flagship premium chocolate offering, maintaining a consistent brand image centered on luxury gifting and gold-foil elegance.
