IndyCar is North America's premier level of professional open-wheel auto racing, centered around the iconic Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. The series traces its historical roots to the early 1900s through various sanctioning bodies like the AAA and USAC, but the modern iteration was founded in 1994 as the Indy Racing League (IRL) by Tony George. The brand was officially unified with its former rival, the Champ Car World Series, in 2008 and rebranded under the singular 'IndyCar' banner in 2011.

In early 2020, ownership of the series transitioned from the Hulman-George family to Penske Entertainment Corp., a subsidiary of the global transportation leader Penske Corporation, founded by racing legend Roger Penske. Starting in 2025 and continuing into 2026, the ownership structure evolved as Fox Corporation acquired a one-third minority stake in Penske Entertainment, strengthening the media integration of the sport. While the cars feature chassis from Italy (Dallara), the series is fundamentally an American sporting product headquartered and operated out of Indianapolis, Indiana.
