Osram is a historic lighting and technology brand that has evolved significantly since its inception in 1906. The name was derived from two chemical elements used in lighting filaments: Osmium and Wolfram (tungsten). It was formally established as a company in 1919 through the merger of the lighting businesses of Auergesellschaft, Siemens & Halske, and AEG. For decades, it was a dominant player in traditional lighting and was a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens AG between 1978 and 2013.
Following its spin-off from Siemens, Osram underwent major structural changes. In 2016, its general lighting business was separated into a brand called Ledvance and sold to a Chinese consortium. In 2020, Osram was acquired by the Austrian sensor specialist ams AG in a multi-billion euro takeover, leading to the creation of ams-OSRAM AG. In 2026, the company continues to pivot away from traditional lamps towards high-tech photonics, sensors, and automotive lighting, having recently divested its entertainment and industry lamps business to the Japanese company Ushio Inc. Today, the brand is synonymous with semiconductor-based light emitters and sensing solutions used in medical, industrial, and automotive applications.
