Golia is a historic Italian brand of candies, widely recognized for its strong balsamic and liquorice flavors. The 'Erbe Alpine' (Alpine Herbs) variant is a sugar-free candy formulated with a blend of medicinal herbs traditionally found in the Alpine region, such as yarrow, mint, sage, and thyme, designed to provide a refreshing and soothing effect for the throat.
The brand was originally created in 1932 by the company Davide Caremoli in Milan. It became a cultural icon in Italy, particularly in the 1950s when the small candies were frequently used as small change in bars. In 1986, the brand was acquired by Perfetti, an Italian confectionery giant based in Lainate. Following the 2001 merger between Perfetti and the Dutch company Van Melle, Golia became part of the Perfetti Van Melle group, which is currently one of the world's largest confectionery manufacturers. The product continues to be primarily manufactured in Italy at the group's historical production facilities.
