The FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is a global motorsport competition established in 1973 by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). It is considered the highest level of international rallying, featuring high-performance cars and elite drivers competing across diverse terrains, from the snow-covered roads of Sweden to the rocky tracks of Kenya.
While the sporting regulations and ownership of the championship title reside with the FIA in France, the commercial and promotional rights are managed by WRC Promoter GmbH, based in Munich, Germany. This company was formed through a partnership between the Red Bull conglomerate and the German investment firm KW 25 (formerly the Sportsman Media Group). As of 2024 and heading into 2026, the series continues to evolve with hybrid Rally1 technology and expanded digital broadcasting through platforms like Rally.TV.
The series is truly international in its manufacturing footprint, as competing vehicles are developed and built by major automotive manufacturers such as Toyota (Japan/Finland), Hyundai (South Korea/Germany), and Ford through M-Sport (USA/UK). Ownership of the brand's commercial vehicle has been a subject of market speculation regarding potential sales to private equity or media giants like Liberty Media, though the sporting soul of the WRC remains under the governance of the FIA.
