NOV Inc., formerly known as National Oilwell Varco, is a major American multinational corporation that serves as a cornerstone of the global energy industry. The company's heritage dates back to 1841 with the founding of Oilwell Supply and 1862 with the establishment of National Supply, both of which provided critical infrastructure during the early days of the oil boom. Over the decades, through hundreds of mergers and acquisitions—most notably the 2005 merger of National Oilwell and Varco—it has evolved into a leading provider of technology, equipment, and services for oil and gas drilling, production, and renewable energy sectors.
Today, NOV operates on a massive scale with over 500 locations across six continents. Its manufacturing footprint is truly global, with major facilities located in the United States (particularly Texas and Louisiana), Denmark, Brazil, Scotland, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. While it rebranded to NOV Inc. in 2021 to reflect a broadening mission toward sustainable energy transitions, it remains a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange, with ownership primarily held by large institutional investors such as BlackRock and Vanguard.
