Breyers is a historic ice cream brand with roots stretching back to 1866 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its founder, William A. Breyer, originally hand-cranked the dessert and sold it from a horse-drawn wagon. For much of its early history, the brand was synonymous with simple, high-quality ingredients. Over the decades, ownership shifted from the Breyer family to National Dairy Products (later Kraft Foods) before being acquired by the global conglomerate Unilever in 1993.

Starting in early 2025, Unilever separated its vast ice cream portfolio—including Breyers, Ben & Jerry’s, and Magnum—into a standalone entity to focus on premium growth. In Canada, Breyers holds a strong local presence; since the 1990s, the "Creamery Style" products sold in the Canadian market have been manufactured at the Unilever facility in Simcoe, Ontario. This specific production line emphasizes the use of 100% Canadian dairy, supporting local farmers and adhering to Canadian labeling standards, which distinguish between traditional "Ice Cream" and "Frozen Dairy Desserts" based on fat content and ingredients.
