Mitre 10 is a major retail brand specializing in hardware, home improvement, and garden supplies, with a history originating in Australia. Founded in Melbourne in 1959 by eight independent hardware retailers, the brand was established as a co-operative to help local businesses gain collective buying power and marketing strength. The name is derived from the 'mitre joint' in carpentry, symbolizing the connection of independent stores.
While the brand shares a common heritage, today it operates as two entirely separate entities in Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, Mitre 10 was fully acquired in 2012 by Metcash Limited, a major Australian wholesale and distribution company. In contrast, Mitre 10 New Zealand remains a locally owned co-operative entity, having secured full ownership of the brand rights within New Zealand in 2010.
Because Mitre 10 is a retailer rather than a single-product manufacturer, the goods sold in its stores come from hundreds of different suppliers. Manufacturing of these products occurs globally, with primarily Australian or New Zealander sourced timber and building materials, while tools and hardware components are often produced in countries like China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
