Clearspring is a pioneering British brand specializing in organic Japanese specialities and international fine foods. Founded in 1993 by Christopher Dawson, the brand's roots can be traced back to Dawson's experiences in New Zealand where he first developed an interest in organic agriculture, followed by 18 years living in Japan. During his time in Japan, he worked closely with traditional artisan producers to convert their manufacturing processes to meet international organic standards, which eventually formed the basis of the Clearspring range.
The brand's production philosophy is unique; rather than operating its own factories, Clearspring partners with approximately 88 contract producers across 15 different countries. Traditional Japanese items such as Miso, Tamari, and Matcha are sourced from master artisans in Japan, while European staples like olive oil, pasta, and tomato sauces are manufactured by specialist family producers in countries like Italy and Greece.
As of 2026, Clearspring remains an independent, family-owned business headquartered in West London. The company is led by founder Christopher Dawson alongside his children, maintaining its commitment to vegan, organic, and non-GMO food principles. It has grown from a small specialist importer into a global health food brand distributed in over 60 countries, while still operating without the backing of a large multinational conglomerate.
