Nubia was established in October 2012 as a premium subsidiary of ZTE Corporation, a major Chinese telecommunications giant. The brand was created to specifically target the high-end consumer market with a focus on professional photography features, bezel-less designs, and innovative mobile technology.

Over the years, the corporate structure of the brand has evolved. In 2015, Nubia was restructured to operate more independently from ZTE, and in 2017, ZTE reduced its stake in the company to 49.9%, officially making Nubia an associate company rather than a wholly-owned subsidiary. This move was partly aimed at providing the brand with more strategic autonomy and global flexibility.

As of 2026, Nubia continues to be a prominent player in the enthusiast and niche device markets, notably through its RedMagic gaming sub-brand. While it operates with significant independence, ZTE Corporation remains its largest and most influential shareholder. Manufacturing is primarily concentrated in China, specifically leveraging the electronics ecosystem in Shenzhen and Nanchang.
