Shell is a global energy giant with a history dating back to the 19th century. The brand's journey began in 1833 when Marcus Samuel started a seashell and antique business in London, which eventually evolved into an oil transport company. In 1907, the British 'Shell' Transport and Trading Company merged with the Netherlands-based Royal Dutch Petroleum Company to form the Royal Dutch Shell Group, creating a powerful rival to American oil monopolies.

Historically, the company operated under a dual-listed structure with headquarters in both London and The Hague. However, in early 2022, the company underwent a major corporate simplification, dropping 'Royal Dutch' from its name to become Shell plc and consolidating its headquarters and tax residency entirely in London, United Kingdom. While the brand carries strong Dutch and British heritage, it is now formally a British multinational corporation. Manufacturing and refining operations are spread globally across more than 70 countries, including major facilities in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and Singapore.
