Minerva bicycles

Minerva is the primary domestic brand of bicycles in Cuba, manufactured by the state-owned enterprise Empresa Industrial Ángel Villarreal Bravo, located in Villa Clara. Founded in 1995, the brand was born out of the necessity of the 'Special Period'—a severe economic crisis in the 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union. During this time, motor transportation stalled due to fuel shortages, leading the Cuban government to import millions of Chinese bicycles (like the Flying Pigeon) and eventually establish local production under the Minerva name.

While Minerva frames and forks have historically been welded and produced in Cuba, many mechanical components are imported from international suppliers, particularly from China. Today, the factory has diversified its assembly lines to include electric bicycles, motorcycles, and tricycles to meet modern urban mobility needs and promote sustainable transport on the island. The brand remains a symbol of Cuban resilience and the central role that pedal power plays in the country's daily Life.
