Contra is a legendary run-and-gun action video game franchise created by Konami. First debuting in 1987 as a coin-operated arcade game, the series became a global phenomenon with its 1988 release on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Known for its high level of difficulty and iconic two-player cooperative play, the original game introduced the famous 'Konami Code' to pop culture, providing players with 30 lives to survive its brutal alien-slaying levels.
While the brand originated in Japan, the manufacturing and development of the series have evolved over decades. Early titles and arcade cabinets were primarily developed and manufactured in Japan. However, contemporary entries and ports have been outsourced to various international studios, including WayForward Technologies in the United States and Appaloosa Interactive in Hungary. As of 2026, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Konami Group Corporation, which continues to manage the IP through its core subsidiary, Konami Digital Entertainment.
