Philadelphia is one of the world's most iconic cream cheese brands, with a history dating back to 1872 when it was accidentally invented by William Lawrence in New York. Despite its name, the product did not originate in Pennsylvania; the brand was named 'Philadelphia' to capitalize on the city's reputation at the time for high-quality dairy production.

In the European market, including the United Kingdom, the brand is managed by Mondelēz International following the 2012 split of Kraft Foods. While the brand originated in the United States, most Philadelphia products sold across Europe are manufactured at Mondelēz's large-scale production facility in Bad Fallingbostel, Germany. This plant supplies over 250 different items to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Ownership of the brand is currently split geographically. While Mondelēz International owns and operates the brand in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia, the Kraft Heinz Company retains ownership and production rights in North America. This dual-ownership structure means that ingredients and textures can vary significantly between regions to cater to local culinary preferences.
