Vicodin pain reliever

Vicodin is a well-known prescription painkiller composed of a combination of hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen. The brand was originally introduced to the U.S. market in 1978 by the German pharmaceutical company Knoll. Throughout its history, Vicodin became one of the most frequently prescribed opioids in the United States, used for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain.

The production and marketing landscape of Vicodin shifted significantly over the decades. In 2001, Abbott Laboratories acquired Knoll's pharmaceutical business, becoming the brand's primary steward. In 2013, Abbott spun off its proprietary pharmaceutical division into a new, independent global biopharmaceutical company called AbbVie. Today, AbbVie remains the ultimate owner of the Vicodin trademark. However, due to regulatory changes regarding acetaminophen limits and the broader opioid crisis, AbbVie discontinued the original brand-name formulations in the mid-2010s. While 'Vicodin' remains a common household name, the medication is now predominantly manufactured and distributed by various pharmaceutical companies as a generic product (Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen).
