The brand was established in 1995 by the Altho company, which was founded by Alain Glon in the Brittany region of France. The mission was to create a local potato industry, and today the brand remains deeply rooted in its regional heritage, sourcing 100% of its potatoes from French farmers, primarily in Brittany and the Centre-Val de Loire regions.

The manufacturing process is concentrated in France, with the primary production sites located in Saint-Gérand (Brittany) and Le Pouzin (Ardèche). The "La Paysanne" line is known for its rustic, thick, and wavy "country-style" cut, seasoned with authentic ingredients like Guérande salt.

Ownership of Bret's has remained firmly within the founding family through the Altho group (part of the AGH holding company). Unlike many major snack brands that have been acquired by global conglomerates, Bret's continues to operate as an independent, family-owned French enterprise.
