The brand was founded in London in 1977 by Nick Brown, who initially developed a waterproofing wax for leather boots. Nikwax has since become a global leader in PFC-free and water-based aftercare products for the outdoor industry. Historically, the company has operated from its base in East Sussex, England, where the majority of its manufacturing continues to take place to ensure high environmental and quality standards.

In a significant transition in February 2022, founder Nick Brown sold the company to its employees through the establishment of an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This move was designed to protect the company's long-term independence and its commitment to sustainable values. As of 2026, the brand remains employee-owned, with its global headquarters and core manufacturing operations firmly rooted in the United Kingdom.
