Originally founded as the 'Ter Beek Bakery' in Almelo, the brand officially adopted the name 'Bolletje' in 1954, a nod to the small balls of dough used to create their famous rusks. Today, it stands as a market leader in the Netherlands for bread substitutes, known for products like crispbread (knäckebröd), crackers, and seasonal treats.

Manufacturing remains centered at its historic heart in Almelo, though the company operates multiple production plants. In 2013, Bolletje underwent a significant transition when it was acquired by the German family-owned company Borggreve Zwieback & Keksfabrik. This acquisition created a strong Dutch-German bakery group, allowing Bolletje to maintain its independent brand identity and A-brand status in the Dutch market while leveraging Borggreve's expertise and distribution networks across Europe.
