Staedtler is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious stationery manufacturers, with a history in pencil-making that dates back to 1662 with Friedrich Staedtler. The company as it exists today was officially founded by Johann Sebastian Staedtler in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1835. He is credited with inventing the wood-cased colored pencil, a significant innovation that changed the art and stationery world.
Today, Staedtler remains deeply rooted in its German heritage, with the vast majority of its manufacturing (approximately 80%) still taking place at its facilities in Nuremberg and Neumarkt. The company also operates production sites in Japan and Peru to serve international markets. Ownership of the brand is unique; since 1997, it has been fully owned by the Staedtler Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting scientific research at German universities and cultural projects, ensuring the company's long-term independence and commitment to quality.
