Onkyo is a historic Japanese audio brand founded in 1946 by Takeshi Godai as Osaka Denki Onkyo K.K. For decades, it was a titan of Japanese hi-fi and home theater engineering. However, the original holding company, Onkyo Home Entertainment, faced significant financial challenges and filed for bankruptcy in 2022.
Following corporate restructuring, the Onkyo brand and its consumer audio-visual business were acquired by a joint venture between the American company VOXX International Corporation (through its subsidiary, Premium Audio Company) and the Japanese conglomerate Sharp Corporation. Under this arrangement, manufacturing was consolidated primarily at Sharp's factories in Malaysia to leverage their advanced supply chain, while engineering and design remain largely rooted in Japan. As of 2026, the brand is celebrating its 80th anniversary, repositioning itself under the 'New Onkyo' vision as a provider of next-generation immersive sound systems and connected home entertainment ecosystems.
