Founded in 1924 by Jakob Bürstner in Kehl, Germany, the company began as a carpentry workshop before transitioning into caravan production in 1958. Over the decades, Bürstner became a pioneer in the industry, notably inventing the semi-integrated motorhome layout in the late 1980s and introducing the innovative drop-down bed for low-profile motorhomes in 2008.

Manufacturing remains centered at the company's headquarters in Kehl, Germany, where a significant portion of its motorhomes are built. Additionally, the brand maintains large-scale production facilities in Wissembourg, France, particularly for its popular campervan and urban camper lines. In 2019, the Erwin Hymer Group was acquired by Thor Industries, Inc., an American multinational and global leader in the RV market. As of 2026, Bürstner continues to operate as a central brand within the Thor Industries portfolio, maintaining its distinct focus on 'Wohnfühlen' (home-from-home well-being) through modern designs such as the Signature and B66 series.
