The brand was launched in 2006 by the Manchester-based company MPM (Making Pet Food Matters) Products Ltd, which was founded in 2002 by Roger Wood, Roger Coleman, and Jon Kinsey. Their mission was to create additive-free food that prioritized natural nutrition for dogs and cats.

The Applaws Taste Toppers line, including the Beef Bone Broth, is designed as a complementary food to enhance hydration and palatability for pets. While the brand originated and is headquartered in the United Kingdom, its production is outsourced to specialized, high-quality manufacturing facilities globally. The company states that the majority of its wet food products are manufactured in Thailand and Ecuador to ensure access to top-tier raw materials and human-grade processing standards.

Following a period of rapid growth and international expansion into over 40 countries, MPM was acquired by the private equity firm 3i Group in 2020. In mid-2025, it was announced that the Swiss-headquartered private equity giant Partners Group would acquire MPM Products. This transition in ownership supports the brand's continuing global expansion and its commitment to social and environmental standards, as evidenced by its B Corp certification.
